Frequently Asked Questions about “Select”
Soccer
(1)
Q: What is the difference between “Rec” and “Select”
Soccer?
A: “Rec” soccer is less competitive than “Select” soccer and is available for all players at all age levels. “Select” soccer is a more competitive level of soccer that is available at the U11 age level and above, and requires players to try-out to make a team. When a child decides to play “Select” soccer, they are making a commitment to the sport and their team and are expected to participate in all practices and games. To be selected for a team means they are taking a spot from another player and must be committed to the team.
If you would like to find out more details about “Rec” soccer, please reference the “Frequently Asked Questions about “Rec” Soccer document.

(5) Q: Who does the evaluating at the try-outs?
A: The Director of Player and Coaching Development will coordinate the tryout activities. Both coaches and individuals independent of the teams will evaluate technique, skill, and level of play. At tryouts players will be given numbers to wear which evaluators will refer to in rating each player’s technical, tactical and physical abilities. Players will participate in an organized session of technical drills, tactical exercises and small-sided games. These sessions are designed to test each player’s technical abilities and skill and will serve to help them distinguish themselves from all the other players.
(6) Q: What happens if my child tries out for Select and does not make the team?
A: Players not making a Select team are automatically placed on a “Rec” team, if one is available at that age level.
(7) Q: Can a player attempt to play-up an age level?
A: All current U9 players

A: The cost to register is $140 along with a $50 per family volunteer fee that is refunded upon 4 hours of volunteer time.
(14) Q: What does my registration fee cover – what isn’t covered?
A: Your registration covers club equipment needs, state WYSA membership fees, league fees, ref fees, field use fees, field maintenance fees, club administration fees, and coaching development fees. It does not cover the additional camps and clinics that the club offers, tournament fees, indoor soccer fees, or the uniform package which is approximately $120 to $180 depending upon items purchased.
(15) Q: Do “Select” teams play all year round?
A: The majority of select teams also participate in indoor league play during the winter. Generally teams will play two sessions of indoor, sometimes all three. The coach and team, not the club, decide involvement in indoor soccer.
(16) Q: How many tournaments will my team compete in?
A: In addition to outdoor league play in the fall and spring, teams participate in two to three tournaments in the spring and fall seasons. Each tournament will provide the team with three to five games, depending on how far they advance. We strongly encourage teams to participate in tournaments; it is one of the most exciting aspects of select soccer. All tournament fees are paid directly by the team and the coach or team manager handles registration. Typically tournaments are $250 to $400 per team, on average $25 to $30 per player for each tournament. Coaches select the tournaments and block these days from league games well in advance of the season. As a result, parents know months in advance the dates and locations of tournaments the team will participate in.
